Leverage and margin
Leverage multiplies both gains and losses. On a 1:30 retail position, a 1% adverse move erases 30% of your margin.
Example
$1,000 margin on a 1:30 EUR/USD position = $30,000 exposure. A 1% drop against you = −$300, gone.

FX markets close Fri 22:00 → Sun 22:00 GMT. News during this window can move price several percent before Monday open, bypassing stop-loss orders.
Example
A 100-pip Monday gap on a $100,000 EUR/USD position = ±$1,000 outside your stop-loss range.
Major economic releases (NFP, ECB, FOMC) widen spreads and slip executions. Stop-losses may fill several pips beyond your set level.
Example
An NFP release can widen EUR/USD spread from 0.6 → 5.0 pips. A $100,000 position fills 4.4 pips worse = −$44 on that fill.
Exotic pairs (USD/TRY, USD/MXN, USD/ZAR) carry country and central-bank risk on top of FX risk. Spreads run 10–30× wider than majors. Liquidity gaps are common.
Example
USD/TRY typical spread is 22 pips vs EUR/USD at 0.6 pips. A 1-lot round trip costs roughly 30× more in spread alone.
